About Common Ground
Common Ground Collective is a creative studio and community that uses art and nature-based making to support individuals with additional needs in developing confidence, wellbeing and a sense of purpose.
What we do
-
We want to see individuals with additional needs feel confident, calm and connected - with opportunities to develop meaningful skills and a strong sense of identity.
-
We aim to achieve this by offering small, thoughtfully designed creative sessions that focus on:
hands-on making
sensory, nature-based processes
building confidence through creating tangible outcomes
Alongside this, we seek to create a supportive environment where individuals feel safe to explore, express and grow.
-
Our sessions are designed to be calm, structured and purposeful, supporting individuals who may benefit from a slower, more supported environment.
Through working with materials such as clay, natural fibres and simple craft processes, participants are guided to create meaningful pieces while developing independence, focus and self-expression.
If you are interested in attending a session, or would like to find out more, please get in touch via our contact page.
-
Common Ground is also developing as a small social enterprise, creating thoughtfully made, nature-inspired products.
In time, this will provide opportunities for participants to contribute to real outcomes, while supporting the sustainability of the studio and its work within the community.
We also offer a small number of workshops for the wider community, with proceeds helping to fund materials, subsidise sessions, and support the continued development of the programme.
Our Main Programme
1. Creative Practice
At the heart of Common Ground is hands-on, nature-based making. Participants are guided through simple, repeatable processes using materials such as clay, natural fibres and found objects. These sessions are designed to build confidence, encourage focus and support self-expression through creating meaningful, tangible outcomes.
2. Life & Creative Skills
Alongside making, sessions gently support the development of wider skills such as independence, communication and decision-making. Through a calm and structured environment, participants are encouraged to build confidence, develop routines and engage with tasks at their own pace.
3. Supportive Environment
Common Ground offers a small, nurturing space where individuals feel safe, understood and supported. With a focus on consistency and calm, sessions are designed to reduce overwhelm and create a sense of belonging, allowing each person to engage in a way that works for them.
4. Purpose & Real Outcomes
Participants are supported to create thoughtful, high-quality pieces that hold meaning and value. Over time, there are opportunities to contribute to shared outcomes, helping to build a sense of pride, identity and purpose through their work.
Who We Are
Many individuals with additional needs face barriers to accessing meaningful, supportive environments where they can feel calm, confident and able to engage.
Opportunities that combine creativity, wellbeing and skill development in a way that is both accessible and purposeful can be limited. As a result, some individuals experience low confidence, reduced independence, and fewer opportunities to express themselves or feel a sense of belonging.
Through our work, we see that when given the right environment — one that is calm, structured and thoughtfully designed — individuals are able to engage more fully, develop new skills and take pride in what they create.
Common Ground has been developed in response to this need: to offer a space where creativity, nature and gentle guidance come together to support wellbeing, confidence and a growing sense of purpose.
Why art?
We believe that creative, hands-on making - particularly when rooted in nature — can be a powerful tool for both wellbeing and personal development.
Working with natural materials such as clay, plants and fibres offers a calming, sensory experience that can support focus, reduce anxiety and encourage self-expression. These processes are gentle, accessible and can be adapted to suit different needs and abilities.
Creative making also provides opportunities to develop meaningful skills through repetition, routine and exploration, helping to build confidence and independence over time.
For us, these materials are more than just a medium — they are a way of creating space for calm, connection and quiet growth.
